Results? The hue of the text gave new meaning to the term “purple prose.” However, you might prefer these purple fonts over illegible or no print in a pinch. We also emptied the black ink tank and made Use Composite mode spin. We can’t tell you how much ink we saved using Black Ink Save mode–though Canon estimates you’ll get 66 percent more yield–but we can report that text quality was pale in our tests, appearing grayish. Save Black Ink reduces the printer’s use of that color, and Use Composite instructs the device to turn color ink black as the noir dries. The Canon Pixma iP90 introduces two features: Save Black Ink, similar to Draft mode on other printers, which reduces the printer’s use of color, and Use Composites, which you can find in the Driver maintenance section under Ink Usage Control. PictBridge and its relatively unusual built-in infrared (IrDA) port are helpful for those who travel very light and want to print from compatible PDAs, cell phones, and cameras. We love the Canon Pixma iP90’s small size, especially how it folds up neatly for travel. The iP90 has a simple semicircular control panel with buttons to power on and resume printing, plus LEDs that glow green and flash in green and orange to communicate everything from everyday printing to significant malfunctions.
